Analysis of pollen load based on color, physicochemical composition and botanical source Anais da ABC (AABC)
Modro,Anna F.H.; Silva,Izabel C.; Luz,Cynthia F.P.; Message,Dejair.
Pollen load samples from 10 hives of Apis mellifera (L.) were analyzed based on their physicochemical composition and botanical source, considering color as a parameter for quality control. In seven samples it was possible to establish the occurrence of more than 80% of a single pollen type, characterizing them as unifloral but with protein content variation. One of the samples was exclusively composed of saprophytic fungi (Cladosporium sp.). Comparing the mean results of the fungi loads with those of the nutritional components of pollen load, the former presented higher protein, mineral matter and dry matter and lower organic matter, ethereal extract and total carbohydrate values. The monochromatic samples met the physicochemical specifications regulating...

Biostratigraphy and paleoecology of an unusual palynological record from the Aquidauana Formation, Late Pennsylvanian of Paraná Basin Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Paulo A.; Perinotto,José A.J.; Félix,Cristina M.; Araújo,Bruno C..
The Aquidauana Formation is a Permo-Carboniferous sedimentary unit, widely stratigraphicaly distributed in the northwestern and northern portions of the Paraná Basin. However, little paleontological data is available from this formation, preventing accurate biostratigraphic and paleoecological interpretations. An abundant, diversified and well preserved assemblage of palynomorphs was recognized from sampling conducted in an outcrop section in Cipolândia District of Aquidauana Municipality, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. A total of 35 indigenous palynomorph taxa was recognized, comprising 6 species of spores (related to 5 genera), 28 species of pollen grains (14 genera) and 1 species of chlorophycean algae. Monosaccate pollen grains are exceptionally...

Climatic characteristics of the late Pleistocene and Holocene continental deposits from southwestern Syria based on palynological data Darwiniana
Hussein,Kamal M..
The goal of this research was to reconstruct the vegetational and climatic changes that took place during the late Pleisocene and Holocene in southwestern Syria. This reconstruction was based on palynological data obtained from the analysis of 27 sediments and surface samples (with a total thickness of 4.55 m) collected from Al-Hijaneh Lake basin (late Pleistocene) and from Al-Aouaj River valley (Holocene). Three pollen zones were established. The oldest one (zone A) corresponds to the late Pleistocene lacustrine deposits of Lake Al-Hijaneh. Zones B and C were defined in the Holocene fluvial- lacustrine deposits of the Al-Aouaj River valley. These three pollen assemblage zones are correlated to synchronic and similar C14 dated pollen zones from Syria,...

Complex sporoderm structure in bryophyte spores: a palynological study of Erpodiaceae Broth. Acta Botanica
Luizi-Ponzo,Andrea Pereira; Silva-e-Costa,Juliana da Costa.
ABSTRACT Palynological studies of bryophytes are critical for evaluating the taxonomic relevance of their spores. They also provide important support to paleoecological investigations that, usually, treat bryophytes as a whole, which does not permit the evaluation of specific functional traits of a special taxonomic unit. The present study investigated the morphology and ultrastructure of spores of five species of Erpodiaceae (Bryophyta), and assessed the implications for taxonomy and the recognition of spores of past records. Erpodiaceae includes corticolous and saxicolous plants that are widely distributed throughout tropical and temperate regions. The spores were found to be isomorphic and apolar with a subcircular amb, granulate, inaperturate. The...

First pollen survey of murundus in the Chapada Diamantina region of the state of Bahia, Brazil Acta Botanica
Oliveira,Paulino Pereira; Funch,Roy Richard; Santos,Francisco de Assis Ribeiro dos.
This was a pollen survey, in which we analyzed the sediments and moss polsters of murundus (termite mounds) in the Chapada Diamantina region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Palynological treatment revealed the presence of 53 pollen types in murundus sediments, of which 23 were related to plants in the semi-arid zone and 30 remained unidentified. In moss polster samples, the pollen assemblage comprised 42 pollen types for which taxonomic affinities were identified and 54 for which they were not. In our comparison of the two pollen assemblages, we found that moss polsters and murundu sediments shared 15 pollen types. For some of the pollen grains in the murundus sediments, it was not possible to make reliable interpretations because of small number of grains...

First record of resting cysts of the benthic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum leve in a natural reservoir in Gujan-Mestras, Gironde, France ArchiMer
Mertens, Kenneth; Gu, Haifeng; Pospelova, Vera; Chomerat, Nicolas; Nezan, Elisabeth; Gurdebeke, Pieter; Bogus, Kara; Vrielinck, Henk; Rumebe, Myriam; Meteigner, Claire.
The resting cysts of the benthic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum leve from a natural reservoir in Gujan-Mestras (Gironde, France) were described in this study. The incubated urn-shaped cysts gave rise to cells of Prorocentrum leve. Morphological observations through light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, particularly of the periflagellar platelets, combined with large subunit ribosomal DNA sequences obtained through single-cell analysis confirm their affinity to the species Prorocentrum leve. The cysts are characterized by a specific shape and the presence of an anterior plug. This is the first conclusive evidence for fossilizable resting stages within the Prorocentrales, one of the major orders within the Dinophyceae. Palynological treatments show...

Holocene history of a lake filling and vegetation dynamics of the Serra Sul dos Carajás, southeast Amazonia Anais da ABC (AABC)
GUIMARÃES,JOSÉ T.F.; SAHOO,PRAFULLA K.; SOUZA-FILHO,PEDRO W.M.; FIGUEIREDO,MARIANA M.J. COSTA DE; REIS,LUIZA S.; SILVA,MARCIO S. DA; RODRIGUES,TARCÍSIO M..
ABSTRACT Down-core changes in sedimentary facies, elemental geochemistry, pollen, spore, δ13C, δ15N and radiocarbon records from a filled lake, named R4, of the Serra Sul dos Carajás were used to study the relationship between the paleomorphological and paleoecological processes and their significance for Holocene paleoclimatology of the southeast Amazonia. The sediment deposition of the R4 lake started around 9500 cal yr BP. Increase of detrital components from 9500 to 7000 cal yr BP suggests high weathering of surrounding catchment rocks and soils, and deposition into the lake basin under mudflows. At that time, montane savanna and forest formation were already established suggesting predominance of wet climate. However, from 7000 to 3000 cal yr BP, a...

Holocene sea-level change inferred from palynological data in the Beagle Channel, southern Tierra del Fuego, Argentina Ameghiniana
Borromei,Ana M.; Quattrocchio,Mirta.
An early-middle Holocene section in Bahía Lapataia (54º 50' S, 68º 34' W), Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina has been examined taking into account its sporomorphs and organic-walled microplankton. The palynological assemblage suggests nearshore environments. Two relatively higher sea levels were identified by the increased abundance of organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts (Brigantedinium spp., Selenopemphix sp., Operculodinium centrocarpum sensu Wall and Dale, Spiniferites spp.), the acritarch Halodinium sp. and zoomorph remains (test linings of foraminifera and copepod egg-envelopes). The littoral vegetation at the time of the marine incursion was mainly arboreal, as can be seen in the pollen records by significant increase in Nothofagus dombeyi...

Hymenodictyeae (Rubiaceae – Cinchonoideae) and its phylogenetic significance Naturalis
Verellen, J.; Dessein, S.; Razafimandimbison, S.G.; Smets, E.; Huysmans, S..
The tribe Naucleeae has recently been recircumscribed on the basis of both morphological and molecular [rbcL, trnT-F, internal transcribed spacer (ITS)] evidence, and has been found to be the sister group of the tribe Hymenodictyeae Razafim. & B. Bremer. In order to find pollen morphological support for this new classification, the pollen and orbicules of 65 species, representing 23 Naucleeae and the two Hymenodictyeae genera, were investigated by scanning electron and light microscopy. Naucleeae pollen is very small (< 20 µm) to small (20–30 µm) and its shape in equatorial view is suboblate to spheroidal or, more rarely, subprolate. Three compound apertures are present, each comprising a long and narrow ectocolpus, a circular to slightly lolongate...

Late Quaternary vegetation dynamics from central parts of the Madeira River in Brazil Acta Botanica
Feitosa,Yuri Oliveira; Absy,Maria Lúcia; Latrubesse,Edgardo Manuel; Stevaux,José Cândido.
The present study reconstructs the paleovegetation of a varzea (seasonally flooded) forest in the central parts of the Madeira River floodplain in Brazil using palynological data. Forty-nine cut-bank sediment samples from the Madeira River were processed in the study; from these, ten samples contained pollen: two contained pollen from the Middle Pleniglacial age, one contained pollen from the Tardiglacial age, six contained pollen from the Holocene, and one contained more recently deposited pollen. The Middle Pleniglacial pollen belonged to a primary succession varzea forest, while the Tardiglacial pollen represented a late succession varzea forest. On the other hand, the three Holocene samples showed the characteristic composition of chavascal...

Miocene fern spores and pollen grains from the Solimões Basin, Amazon Region, Brazil Acta Botanica
Sá,Natália de Paula; Carvalho,Marcelo de Araújo.
ABSTRACT This work documents fern spores and pollen grains (miospores) recovered from rocks of the Solimões Formation (Solimões Basin), their botanical affinities, ecology and distribution in the Miocene of the Amazon Region. The assemblage of miospores is well preserved and diverse. They are identified, illustrated and assigned to the ten families of ferns and 22 families of spermatophytes. All miospores were identified to the taxonomic level of species except for two taxa (Perinomonoletes and Podocarpidites). The families Pteridaceae and Arecaceae were most representative of ferns and spermatophytes, respectively. This work contributes to the knowledge of the paleoflora and will aid in paleoenvironmental, paleoecological and biostratigraphic...

Model of wetland development of the Amapá coast during the late Holocene Anais da ABC (AABC)
Guimarães,José T.F.; Cohen,Marcelo C.L.; França,Marlon C.; Lara,Rúben J.; Behling,Hermann.
The modern vegetation types, sedimentary sequences, pollen records and radiocarbon dating obtained from three sediment cores from Calçoene Coastal Plain were used to provide a palaeoecological history during the late Holocene of Amapá coastal wetland according to flood regime, sea-level and climatic changes. Based on these records, four phases of vegetation development are presented and they probably reflect the interaction between the flow energy to the sediment accumulation and the brackish/freshwater influence in the vegetation. This work suggests interchanges among time periods characterized by marine and fluvial influence. The longitudinal profile did not reveal the occurrence of mangrove in the sediment deposited around 2100 yr B.P. During the second...

Modern processes of palynomorph deposition at lakes of the northern region of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Luz,Cynthia F.P. da; Barth,Ortrud M.; Silva,Cleverson G..
Palynological analysis of pollen, Pteridophyta spores and algae deposited in the superficial sediments at Lagoa de Cima and Lagoa do Campelo Lakes, located in the north of Rio de Janeiro state, was used to determine the spatial variation of the palynomorphs deposition. A total of 67 pollen types were identified at Lagoa de Cima, with an expressive contribution of regional arboreous taxa, hydrophytes and ruderal plants of the pastureland. The depositional pattern of palynomorphs depends on the fluvial leakage, the proximity of the local sedimentation to the inlet of the Imbé and Urubu Rivers and the bathymetry of lake bottom. The highest concentrations of palynomorphs were observed in the decentralized and less deeper area, without the interference of the...

New Holocene pollen records from the Brazilian Caatinga Anais da ABC (AABC)
MEDEIROS,VANDA B. DE; OLIVEIRA,PAULO E. DE; SANTOS,RUDNEY A.; BARRETO,ALCINA M.F.; OLIVEIRA,MARCELO A.T. DE; PINAYA,JORGE L.D..
Abstract We present two pollen diagrams from the semi-arid Caatinga of the Catimbau National Park, in Pernambuco and from a Mauritia palm forest in the Caatinga/Cerrado ecotone of southern Piauí, NE Brazil, spanning the last 10,000 cal. yrs BP and the last 1,750 cal yrs BP, respectively. These two records contain a signature of the local vegetation and permit the correlation of the pollen signal with regional climatic changes. The Catimbau record shows Zizyphus sp., a typical Caatinga taxon, in all three pollen zones indicating regional Caatinga vegetation and the predominance of local arboreal taxa adapted to high humidity from 10,000 to ca. 6,000 cal. yrs BP with a gradual tendency towards drier conditions revealed by a deposition hiatus between 6,000 to...

New palynological data from the Malanzán Formation (Carboniferous), La Rioja Province, Argentina Ameghiniana
Palynological analysis of the Malanzán Formation in the Paganzo Basin, northwestern Argentina, has yielded six well-preserved palynological assemblages. Fifty-nine species were determined: 37 spores, 19 pollen grains, and 3 algae. Thirty-two of these species have not been recorded so far from the Malanzán Formation, and all pollen species are illustrated for the first time. These assemblages are referred to Sub-Biozone A of the Raistrickia densa-Convolutispora muriornata Biozone, Serpukhovian in age. Moreover, the abundance of monosaccate pollen grains might constrain the Malanzán Formation to the late Serpukhovian.
